Pregnancy, Birth & beyond....

"It is often said that the first sound we hear in the womb is our mother's heartbeat.

Actually, the first sound to vibrate our newly developed hearing apparatus is the pulse of our mother's blood

through her veins and arteries. We vibrate to that primordial rhythm even before we have ears to hear.

Before we were conceived, we existed in part as an egg in our mother's ovary.

All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries

while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother.

This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother.

Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb

and she in turn formed within the womb of her grandmother.

We vibrate to the rhythms of our mother's blood before she herself is born.

And this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.

We all share the blood of the first mother - we are truly children of one blood."

(from When the drummers were women by Layne Redmond)

My maternal grandmother and her sister, my mother and all her siblings, my brother and I were all born with the support and loving care of the same independent midwife, Giuseppina, who was also a great family friend. When I discovered this amazing event a few years ago from my mother sharing my birth story, I felt a huge sense of gratitude towards Giuseppina and the greatest bond to all of us in my mother line. I still remember her when she was in her eighties (!) caring for my mother pregnant with my younger brother. I was only seven years old then but her presence had a great psychological impact on me as a child, she was such a remarkable woman: to me she was really special as she was able to 'feel and listen to' the baby in my mother's belly and was so caring with my mum.

We were all truly blessed.

And we are blessed today by a multitude of amazing midwives, antenetal (and postnatal) teachers and therapists, doulas and birth activits that are working to support and nurture women and their babies as they journey together through pregnancy, birth and motherhood.

Years ago I was 'guided' to become one of those and I am immensely grateful to have embraced that calling - for all that this work has brought into my life so far, for all that it is yet to come. Please have a look at all I'm offerings in this section

I am honoured to support you through your journey, with great respect and love...
